Kevin graduated as a veterinary surgeon from the Royal Veterinary College in 1977 and was in farm animal practice for over 30 years. He is a member of the British Cattle Veterinary Association.
He has been involved in meat hygiene work since 1986 and has been the lead Official Veterinarian at a high throughput cattle abattoir in Somerset for 15 years. As well as having broad experience in meat hygiene and animal welfare, his involvement and interest in cattle identification investigations during this time led to him carrying out a Defra -funded project into tamper-evidence of bovine ear tags in 2010. This included extensive industry research and detailed experimental work on ear tags of all major manufacturers/ suppliers.
He is the lead author of a recently published scientific paper on a large scale, epidemiological study into the effects of age, breed and sex on the anterior tooth development in cattle.
He is appointed to the Defra Lot 2 panel as an expert advisor on cattle identification and has acted as an expert witness for 8 Local Authorities in cattle identification cases.
